Building granny flats: Govt new proposal

The Government wants your feedback on building granny flats on a property with an existing home on it.

The proposal is to allow self-contained one storey granny flats up to 60m2 to be built without the need for a building or resource consent.

This would save up to $6,500 in building and resource consenting fees per build.

It’s proposed that the granny flat would need to be simple, straightforward and have a low-risk design.

The design and building work would also need to be carried out, or supervised, by qualified professionals and comply with the New Zealand Building Code.

The goal of this proposal is to find a balance between building safe, healthy and durable homes, and building them as quickly as possible.
